The Dent County Animal Shelter opened in late January of 1993.
The Dent County Animal Welfare Society formed in 1990 with the hope of improving conditions for animals and creating awareness in this area.
Because of the dismal, disgraceful condition of the city pound and no county facility at all, there was no decent place for dogs and cats to stay while they waited for adoption. DCAWS workers began trying to raise money and applied for several grants. They received a grant for $25,000 from the Marguerite Doe Foundation in Santa Barbara, California. Volunteers worked at fundraising and in the fall of 1992 construction started.
It is and always has been the goal of our organization to be a "no-kill" shelter. Despite all obstacles, we have kept the euthanasia rate at less than 20% average over the ten years of operation, a lower rate than most no-kill shelters have.
